Guitar Tip: Amp Guide

Here’s a quick reference guide to help you sort out the different types of amps available on the market today. 1) All Solid State: Both the pre-amp stage and the power amp stage are transistor-driven. This is relatively modern and the technology is inexpensive. 2) All Tube: Both the pre-amp and power amp stages are tube powered. Typically the tube in the pre-amp stage is a 12AX7 tube, with power amp tubes being EL34s, 6L6s, 0r 6550s. This technology is a lot older and consequently more expensive. This is also the technology most favored by guitarists. 3) Hybrid: Hybrid amps boast a tube pre-amp and a solid state power amp. Sounds good in theory, but in my personal opinion (you are free to differ), doesn’t quite cut the mustard in practice.
