Guitar Rigs of the Gods, Part
2. Jimi Hendrix probably had the sound that is now the most imitated guitar
sound on the planet. Throughout his career, he played through a variety of amps
(Fender and Sunn, before finding Marshall) as well as an even wider variety of
pedals (more on this anon.) The one constant in his brief but brilliant life was
the Fender Stratocaster, designed for right-handers, but strung for a lefty and
then flipped over. The consequences of this to his overall sound really can’t
be overstated. First, the string tensions were all different, affecting to overall
tone as well as what happened when he grabbed the Whammy bar – which he did, vigorously
and often. Second, the Pickups were now angled differently. Third, while the controls
of the guitar do not affect the tone in any way, it certainly affects the way
the performer approaches his instrument – and as we all know, this was perhaps
the most influential element of his sound. |
